Women experience normal vaginal discharge at different stages of the menstrual cycle and under certain conditions. Vaginal discharge is a fluid or mucus that comes out of the vagina. It is a natural part of the female reproductive system that cleans and protects the vagina from infection.

When do women experience normal vaginal discharge?

Women experience normal vaginal discharge in several conditions and menstrual cycles, including:

  • Before ovulation (follicular phase)
  • During ovulation
  • After ovulation (luteal phase)
  • Before menstruation
  • After menstruation
  • In early pregnancy
  • During and after sexual activity
  • At the beginning of puberty, as a sign of hormonal changes
  • As an effect of using hormonal contraceptives
  • Before menopause

Normal vaginal discharge characteristics

Vaginal discharge is produced by glands in the vagina and cervix to clean and moisten the vagina. Normal vaginal discharge has several characteristics, including consistency and texture, color, odor, and quantity. Here are some characteristics of normal vaginal discharge:

Consistency and texture

  • Watery and sticky, particularly at the start of the menstrual cycle and during ovulation
  • Sticky and thick after ovulation and before menstruation
  • Milky or pale white after menstruation or ovulation

Color

  • Clear and liquid during ovulation
  • Clear and elastic when sexually stimulated
  • Milky white or pale white that appears at different times, both after and before the next menstruation

Odor

  • Mild, almost odorless odor, and causes no discomfort.
  • Variations in the odor of vaginal discharge can be caused by hormonal influences, menstrual cycles, or dietary patterns
  • There is no need to be concerned if the odor is not overpowering

Amount

  • Each woman produces different amounts of vaginal discharge. Some women have a lot of discharge every day, whereas others may have very little
  • Vaginal discharge usually increases during ovulation, pregnancy, and when using birth control pills, depending on the need and role
  • During ovulation, vaginal discharge facilitates the passage of sperm to the egg, so it is usually more abundant and elastic

Watch out for abnormal vaginal discharge

You should be aware of vaginal discharge that indicates bacterial infections, signs of polyps, yeast infections, sexually transmitted diseases, urinary tract infections, or more serious conditions such as cervical cancer. Here are the signs to watch out for:

  • Abnormal color of vaginal discharge, such as dark yellow, green, grey, brown, or mixed with blood
  • Vaginal discharge that is thick and clumpy, like cottage cheese
  • Foamy vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal discharge with a fishy or foul odor
  • Vaginal discharge with itching, irritation, pain, redness, or burning

If you notice any changes or signs of abnormal vaginal discharge, contact your doctor right away. The doctor can assist with evaluating and providing appropriate treatment.
